New Findings May Mean Flavored Inhalers For Asthma Sufferers

Everyone knows our taste buds are in our mouths. Now it turns out they may be in our lungs too. Research has led to a new discovery that there are "taste receptors" in lungs that respond to bitter substances.
The lung taste buds don't act like taste buds in our mouths. We can't actually taste anything with our lungs, and curiously, when lungs do respond to taste, they don't send any kind of signal to the brain. In the study by the University of Maryland, the airways of mice were "treated with bitter substances, then exposed to allergens." And then the mice lungs do something very curious and unexpected; the air passageways don't protectively contract or close up. Instead they open wide, as if they had been influenced by a drug for asthma. In fact, according to a researcher quoted by the BBC, they "opened the airway more profoundly" than any current used drug.
And this is why the findings are so interesting-- they may bring new options to traditional drug treatments for those suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma. New treatments could use inhalers that have bitter substances in them "such as quinine or even saccharine, which has a bitter after-taste," for asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Although the study is intriguing, and studies on mice can provide meaningful data, it's another step to see if human lungs react the same way. And this is the next step. And clearly it's an important step to take, as in many cases asthma drugs fail to effectively control the symptoms, leaving many millions of people suffering without recourse to what one day may be a simple and effective way open our airways.
Of course, in the research journey from mouse to human, other problems may arise that make the new treatment idea unfeasible. But this is exactly the kind of medical research that is worth supporting; something that if it works, may lead to kind of safer, more effective, and less expensive treatments that will allow millions of people to finally breathe a deep and happy sigh of relief.
Preventing Asthma Tip: There's a common drug in most of our medicine cabinets that can cause asthma or make it worse. If you have asthma attacks, you may wish to avoid using NSAIDS, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen.

Today's Lessons...
Little Jimmy watched his Daddy's car pass by the school playground, and then go into the nearby woods. Curious, he followed, and he saw his Daddy and his Aunt Jane in the middle of a passionate embrace.
Little Jimmy found this so exciting, that he could hardly contain himself, as he ran home to tell his Mother. Mommy! Mommy! I was at the playground, and I saw Daddy's car go into the woods, with Aunt Jane. I went back to look, and he was giving Aunt Jane a big kiss, and then he helped her take off her shirt and Aunt Jane helped Daddy take his pants off. Right at that point, his Mother cut him off, and said to him, 'Jimmy, this is such an interesting story - save it for dinner time. I want to see the look on your Daddy's face when you tell it tonight.
Later, at the dinner table that evening, the Mother asked little Jimmy to tell his story.
Jimmy then started in: 'I was at the playground, and I saw Daddy's car go into the woods, with Aunt Jane. I went back to look, and he was giving Aunt Jane a big kiss, then he helped her take off her shirt. Then Aunt Jane helped Daddy take his pants off, and then Aunt Jane and Daddy started doing the same thing that Mommy and Uncle Bill used to do when Daddy was away on the oil rigs.
The moral: Sometimes you just need to shut the fuck up, and listen to the whole story, instead of interrupting folks all the damn time!

WILLOW AS ANNIE!!!
Overbrook Entertainment has teamed up with Jay-Z, Will and Jada Smith to produce an “Annie” vehicle that the superstar couple’s daughter Willow will star in.
“The time is right to bring back ‘Annie’ to the big screen,” said Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad (the film will be developed by Sony Pictures) in a statement. “Of course, we’re true believers in Willow’s talent and believe she will be perfect in this role. Combining Willow with the Overbrook team that re-imagined ‘Karate Kid’ and the spectacular Jay-Z makes this a dream project.”
Overbrook Entertainment, which was founded by partners James Lassiter and Will Smith. Jada, Will, James Lassiter [of Overbrook] and Jay-Z decided to co-invest in the now successful beauty products line Carol’s Daughter. They continued this partnership as co-producers of the successful Broadway production ‘Fela!’, which earned a total of eleven Tony Award nominations in 2010.” Lest you forget, Jay is the guy who signed Willow to his Roc Nation label, which produced her smash single, “Whip My Hair.” Not to mention that Jay himself has had success with sampling the “Annie” property to create his own single, “Hard Knock Life.” But the partnership isn’t stopping there – this team is also aiming to develop and produce other feature films.
Willow’s previous acting experience includes roles in “I Am Legend,” “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl,” “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” and “True Jackson, VP” — not to mention that she also has a hit record with last year’s single “Whip My Hair.”
Reps for the project wouldn’t confirm whether the new “Annie” would be set in contemporary times and include original songs, although it’s rumored that Jay-Z is working on the music (his 1998 tune “Hard Knock Life” included a chorus from the musical).
This isn’t the first time Will has produced movies for his kids. He developed last year’s “The Karate Kid” remake for his son Jaden.

WISDOM
Ecclesiastes 7:11-25
11 Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing and benefits those who see the sun.
12 Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom preserves the life of its possessor.
13 Consider what God has done: Who can straighten what he has made crooked?
14 When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider: God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, a man cannot discover anything about his future.
15 In this meaningless life of mine I have seen both of these: a righteous man perishing in his righteousness,
and a wicked man living long in his wickedness.
16 Do not be overrighteous, neither be overwise — why destroy yourself?
17 Do not be overwicked, and do not be a fool — why die before your time?
18 It is good to grasp the one and not let go of the other. The man who fears God will avoid all extremes.

21 Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you-
22 for you know in your heart that many times you yourself have cursed others.
23 All this I tested by wisdom and I said, "I am determined to be wise" — but this was beyond me.
24 Whatever wisdom may be, it is far off and most profound — who can discover it?
25 So I turned my mind to understand, to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things and to understand the stupidity of wickedness.

The Conclusion of the Matter
9 Not only was the Teacher wise, but also he imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.
10 The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.
11 The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails—given by one Shepherd.
12 Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.
13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.
These passages made perfect sense to me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope you find it to be a good read.

WHIP MY HAIR
Jay-Z has found his newest project in Will Smith's daughter Willow. The 9-year-old, whose first single "Whip My Hair" is a huge hit on the Internet, has signed a record deal with Jay-Z's record company. "I heard the record first before I knew that it was recorded by a 9-year-old and I was like, 'man that record's a smash'," Jay told Ryan Seacrest. So is he worried that little Willow is too young for stardom? "When you have that sort of talent, there is no such thing as too young," he said Thursday. And he should know - Jay-Z, of course, also launched the career of super-songstress Rihanna.

WORDS OF WISDOM
Everyone get several sets of parents, though not everyone realizes it. The first set are simply the ones we're most strongly connected with, but teachers, mentors, friends and even our mates can offer a little parenting now and then. You should be pleased with someone who's working in that capacity now, and not just because they love you. They're more than happy to help you with the thing you need the most -- which is the one thing you don't yet know you need.

Minister Joe Wright
This prayer was given in Kansas at the opening session of their Senate. It seems prayer still upsets some people.. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:
The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest. In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India , Africa and Korea ..
Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on his radio program, 'The Rest of the Story,'and
received a larger response to this program than any other he has ever aired.

Tyler Perry Adds Old Spice's Isaiah Mustafa to 'For Colored Girls'
Former NFL player Isaiah Mustafa, whose fame has recently risen due to his popularity as the new face of Old Spice products was just given a role in Tyler Perry's much-buzzed-about film adaptation of 'For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.'
While speaking to Oprah Winfrey via satellite about his newfound celebrity success over the commercials, Mustafa talked about auditioning for film parts, including one for an upcoming Tom Hanks movie, television pilots and Perry's upcoming film.
When he asked the reigning queen of daytime television to put in a good word with Perry, Mustafa was surprised when the filmmaker got on and stated, "I just want to tell you, you got the part, man. You did a great job. You got the part."
The Arizona State University alum joins the all-star roster, which already includes Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine,Macy Gray and Anika Noni Rose.
Based on Ntozake Shange's award-winning 1975 play, the film is scheduled to shoot in June in New York with a possible winter 2010 release date.
After playing for various teams in the NFL, Mustafa appeared on episodes of 'Castle,' 'Days of Our Lives', 'Eli Stone,' 'Football Wives', 'NCIS,' 'NCIS: Los Angeles' and 'Ugly Betty.'
According to Advertising Age, the Old Spice "I'm on a Horse" commercial -- in which the 36-year-old Mustafa appears -- saw some 1.6 million views in the two weeks after it debuted during the Super Bowl.

How health care reform will impact you...
While this bill does not contain everything we wanted or needed, it is a great step toward creating a better America. This day has been a long time coming. All the way back to President Teddy Roosevelt, our nation has been trying to create more health care fairness for its citizens. Now, history and destiny intersect.
This bill is about affordability, insurability, and accountability. It is intended to address the fact that 1 in 5 African Americans, 1 in 3 Hispanics, and 1 in 10 Whites do NOT have health insurance today.
PRICE TAG. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says the bill will cost $940 billion over 10 years.
SAVINGS. According to new CBO estimates, the measure will save $143 billion 2019, and reduce the deficit by $1.2 trillion in the second ten years.
NUMBER OF PEOPLE COVERED. 32 million uninsured people will be insured when coverage begins in 2014. Although not universal coverage, 95 percent of Americans will have health coverage, as opposed to 83 percent today.
EXCHANGES. Starting in 2014, the uninsured, small businesses and self-employed individuals can select coverage through state-run exchanges, pools that provide the same types of purchasing power as big corporations. Undocumented immigrants are not allowed to participate in the exchanges, even if they pay for it entirely from their own funds.
REFORMS. Insurance companies cannot deny children coverage based on a preexisting condition six months after passage. Beginning in 2014, insurance companies may not deny coverage to anyone with a preexisting condition. Children can stay on their parent's insurance plans through age 26. Insurance companies are barred from arbitrarily dropping policy holders. In addition, insurers must spend at least 85 cents of every premium dollar on medical care in small group markets, and 80 cents in large group markets. Medicare Advantage plans are required to spend at least 85 percent of revenues on medical care.
ABORTION RESTRICTIONS. No health plan would be required to offer abortion coverage. Private insurance premium funds that pay for abortions are segregated from taxpayer money. As a gesture to anti-abortion Democrats who threatened to vote against the bill, a White House executive order extends the Hyde Amendments restrictions on abortion to the newly-created health insurance exchanges.
MANDATES. Nearly everyone is required to purchase insurance or pay a $695 annual fine. Low-income people are exempt. This feature takes effect in 2014. Although an employer mandate does not exist, employers with over 50 workers will be fined $2000 per employee per year.
SUBSIDIES. People who make between 100 percent and 400 percent of the federal poverty level will be eligible for subsidies to purchase insurance. Premiums for a family of four making $44,000 would have a cap of about 6 percent of income.
REVENUE SOURCES. The plan will be paid for with a 10 percent tax on indoor tanning services; a Medicare payroll tax of 3.8 percent for families earning over $250,000 and individuals making over $200,000; and a 40 percent tax paid by insurance companies on plans over $27,500 for families and $10,200 for individuals.
MEDICAID. The government health insurance program for poor Americans would be available to everyone with incomes up to 133 percent of the poverty level, which is $10,830 for an individual and $22,050 for a family of four.
MEDICARE. This legislation cuts $500 billion in Medicare over ten years, and closes the Medicare prescription drug donut hole by 2020. Seniors who are hit the donut hole gap in coverage by 2010 will receive a $250 rebate. In 2011, such people will receive a 50 percent discount on brand name drugs.
STUDENT LOANS. The health care legislation has eliminated banks and private lenders as middlemen in the federally-guaranteed student loan market, for a savings of $60 billion over ten years. This means more money for Pell grants and HBCUs.
PUBLIC OPTION. A government-run insurance plan, although popular, is missing in the measure. This was due to a lack of will in Congress. Consumers who purchase health insurance through national exchanges could purchase private and nonprofit plans through a federal agency that oversees the Congressional health plans. However, Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D, Nevada) promises a vote on the public option in the coming months. A public option could save an additional $110 billion over 10 years. Meanwhile, a single-payer system, a truly universal, government-run system in which one agency finances the nations health care could save the U.S. over $350 billion annually.
